Essex Walking Football League Kicks Off

After months of preparation the Essex Walking Football League has finally kicked off the 2024 season

On an extremely windy day at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford the Essex League kicked off the season with twelve Division 1 games and nine Division 4 games all in the Over 50s age range.

First up were the Division 4 games and the League welcomed several new teams to the Division, namely Bexley Whites from south of the Thames, Heybridge Swifts, Stanway and Valley Green. It became obvious that some had not played competitive walking football before but decisions were taken in good faith and players were keen to learn. After these opening games it was new comers Stanway that sit top of the Division 4 table.

Next up were the Division 1 games. These are all seasoned League teams who play a highly competitive style of walking football. This led to a higher frequency of warnings and several blue cards being brandished. All in all the games went well with teams pleased to finally get the season underway. Sitting top are Romford narrowly followed by Concord Rangers Yellows on goal difference. There is a long season ahead with no doubt many twists and turns along the way.

The next Over 50s fixtures are on Saturday 20th April (Division 2) and Saturday 27th April (Division 3). All are at Melbourne Park and kick off at 12pm.
